YOUNG BALKAN DESIGNERS is an annual regional design competition open for all designers under age 35, initiated by cultural organization MIKSER with the aim of providing the platform for discovering and nourishing young talents in the Balkan region, while contributing to restoration of regional networks and cooperation. "Young Balkan Designers" naturally evolved from "Young Serbian Designers" project initiated and led by Mikser in 2009 and 2010. Growth from national (Serbian) to a regional (South-East Europe) scope of the project came naturally, due to a very intense interest by young designers from entire region to participate in Mikser competitions owing to regional success of the Misker festival and international success of the “Young Serbian Designers” project. This year, competition "Young Balkan Designers" received nearly 400 entries in the field of industrial design. Competition applications arrived from 15 different countries in the region. Compared to last year, the number of submitted projects rose by as much as 100%, which clearly indicates the design boom in the region and justifies Mikser’s decision to develop its successful national platform "Young Balkan Designers" into a regional competition for young designers from all over South Eastern Europe, from Vienna to Istanbul.
In a very sharp competition international Jury presided by world renown industrial designer and mentor of the project Konstantin Grčić chose 10 innovative projects that represent original design solutions which serve to enhance the quality of everyday life, with rational production costs and environment friendly production process.
The winners of the regional competition “Young Balkan Designers 2011" are thirteen selected designers coming from 5 countries: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece and Serbia. They represented the region’s creative potential at some of the most prestigious international furniture fairs and regional design events, so far at: Salone Satellite of Milan Furniture Fair (Italy, April 2011), Talent zone at the Mikser festival in Belgrade (Serbia, May 2011), D Day in Zagreb (Croatia, June 2011), Sofia Design Week (Bulgaria, June 2011), Budapest Design Week (Hungary, September 2011), and now Skopje Design Week (Macedonia, September 2011).
Project “YOUNG BALKAN DESIGNERS 2011” is made possible through collaboration with Mikser partner ALPHA BANK SERBIA.
